Biological Agents & Threats


The U.S. Government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have compiled a list of biological agents and threats. CDC states that the U.S. public health system and primary healthcare providers must be prepared to address various biological agents including pathogens that are rarely seen in the Unites States. The CDC has placed these biological agents and threats in three categories. Category A are high priority agents that pose a risk to national security because they:

1. can be easily disseminated or transmitted from person to person
2. result in high mortality rates and have the potential for major public health impact
3. might cause public panic and social disruption
4. require special action for public health awareness


Category A includes:

anthrax, botulism, plague, smallpox, tularemia, viral hemorrhagic fevers (for example ebola), and arenaviruses.

Category B

are the second highest priority agents and include those that: 1. are moderately easy to disseminate
2. result in moderate morbidity rates and low mortality rates
3. require specific enhancement of CDC’s diagnostic capacity and enhanced disease surveillance


Category B

includes: brucellosis, epsolin toxin of clostridium perfingens, food safety threats (for example salmonella, e-coli), glanders, meliodosis, psittacosis, Q fever, Ricin toxin from castor beans, Staphylococcal enterotoxin B, Typhus fever, and Viral encephalitis

Category C

are the third highest priority agents and include emerging pathogens that could be engineered for mass dissemination in the future because of:

1. availability
2. ease of production and dissemination
3. potential for high morbidity and mortality rates and major health impact


Category C includes: emerging infectious threats such as Nipah virus and hantavirus
